It just got easier to install Spotify on Ubuntu, Linux Mint and other distributions thanks to Snappy.
Sep 07, 2016 A few months back the official Spotify desktop app lost its built-in lyrics feature, as Spotify’s deal with MusixMatch came to an end. ‘Spotify Web Player for Linux’ brings lyrics back to Spotify. When listening to a track you want to croon along to just hit the ‘Sing!’ button in the sidebar. Lyrics are also cached to save bandwidth. Sep 21, 2020 Although Spotify is available on Linux, it does not support the feature that other platforms have where it is possible to send the Spotify app to the system tray, out of sight. Sadly, the Spotify developers haven’t added this feature to the Linux version of the app, and there’s no way of knowing if it will ever come.

The launch of the official Spotify Snap app means it’s far more convenient for fans of Spotify to install the music streaming app on Ubuntu desktops, as no external downloads or repo commands are required.
Of course, the hugely popular music streaming service is no stranger to the Linux. A native Spotify for Linux client has been available since 2010 (though the player did lack a dedicated developer for a while).
But lest anyone mistake the appearance of the Spotify snap as an about-turn in their support for Linux in general, the store description notes: “[Linux] is currently not a platform that we actively support. The experience may differ from our other Spotify Desktop clients, such as Windows and Mac.”

‘There’s no difference between the Spotify snap and the version you can download elsewhere’
If snap applications aren’t your thing you’ll be pleased to know Spotify remains available elsewhere too. Best mac tax software canada.
You can, for instance, install Spotify from Flathub, the Flatpak app store; and a traditional apt repository is available for Ubuntu (should you prefer to get your app updates the old-fashioned way).
Distribution method aside there’s no difference between the Spotify snap app and the version you can download elsewhere.
Literally no difference; all the features that work in the regular Spotify Linux app work in the snap build, including access for free accounts, playlists, podcasts,
Spotify for Linux also has media key support and MPRIS integration (e.g., the Ubuntu Sound Menu, GNOME Shell Message Tray, Budgie’s Raven, etc) so that you can control music playback regardless of whether the app is in focus or not.
Install Spotify Snap on Ubuntu
It’s super easy to install the Spotify Linux Snap app on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS or later. Don’t believe me? Try it:
That’s it!

Spotify will download and install right away. Once done you can click the ‘launch’ button in Ubuntu Software to open it. You can also open Spotify from the Unity Dash (if you use Unity), the Applications Overview (if you use GNOME Shell), or whatever application launcher you use.
You can also install the Spotify Linux app from the command line on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and above:

In honour of the streaming music service’s assimilation into the world of Snap apps here’s a song by Snap! to celebrate:
It may be a while before Spotify make an official Ubuntu Phone app or scope, so it’s up to third-party developers to ensure that early adopters of the platform aren’t greeted by silence.
“CuteSpotify” is the best of the current crop, and has been freshly retuned to take advantage of the latest features and toolkits in Ubuntu for Phones/Tablets developer builds.
Music to Your Ears
Using the official music streaming service’s API, Mike Sheldon’s CuteSpotify allows premium subscribers to log in and stream content straight to their device.
Just like the official Spotify apps on Android and iOS, the app can set music steaming to work over Wi-Fi and/or cellular networks, has basic offline functionality, and surfaces popular content based on what others are listening to.
The latest version also introduces experimental support for handling Spotify URLs. Clicking on such a link in a tweet or scope should, in theory, prompt the app to open. At present, this is a bit hit and miss and will only work when the app is open in the foreground.
Drawbacks
One thing you won’t find on offer is Facebook integration (a plus in my book), and the client isn’t as big on visuals as the service’s own apps. How to download purchased songs on itunes mac.
The application life-cycle policies enforced on Ubuntu Touch* also mean that the app is unable to run in the background. If you switch to another app during streaming the app will stop playing music.
Optimism
Unofficial, third-party apps have, over the years, helped to patch over the early”app gap” that all fledgling mobile platforms go through. Ubuntu is no exception. Spotify does provide an official (native) desktop client for Ubuntu/Linux music fans to use, but have (understandably) yet to talk of any plans to make an official Ubuntu for Phones/Tablet version.
While simple rather than flashy, CuteSpotify ticks all the boxes it needs to. Its presence could help in persuading the more cautious adopters in switching to Ubuntu as their mobile device of choice next month. Download game robbery bob mod apk money.
CuteSpotify is a free app and can be installed from the ‘Click App Store’ Scope. It is also available for Jolla’s SailfishOS.
*To avoid having to caveat and bracket every reference to Ubuntu when writing about apps, content and services we will, no doubt at the chagrin of its developers, sometimes refer to its Phone, Tablet and ‘Next’ guises as ‘Ubuntu Touch’.Comments are closed.
