Why Is Mac Keyboard Not Working?
Before you can fix the problem, first you have to determine exactly what the problem is. There are a few possible issues that could lead to your MacBook keyboard not working.
One thing to note is that a MacBook keyboard isnât like most other keyboards on the market. Instead of using a scissor-like mechanism, MacBooks feature a proprietary Apple butterfly-like keyboard with a slightly different design.
Ever wondered how Apple laptops are so slim? Part of that is the butterfly keyboard mechanism. Whereas most keyboardsâ scissor mechanism provides tension on keys so that they click back into place once you finish typing, Apple designed a minimal switch as slim and elegant as a butterfly â hence the name.
Unfortunately, the butterfly keyboard is also just as fragile as a butterfly too. If even one spec of dust gets under a key and into the mechanism, it can lead to problems like a key repeating, sticking, or not registering hits at all.
Itâs one thing if your Z key sticks occasionally. Itâs another if your spacebar wonât work. Thus, fixing your MacBook keyboard canât be put off for very long once itâs stopped working.
How do I fix a MacBook keyboard or MacBook Pro keyboard?
The short answer is: not you. The longer answer is an authorized Apple dealer will fix your MacBook Pro keyboard for free.
In some rare cases a blast of compressed air could clear the dust from the keyboard. Even though it wonât do the job for most, itâs worth trying since a can of air only costs a few dollars. But donât expect salvation.
Apple has admitted that thereâs a flaw with their design and as long as your MacBook is recognized as one of the afflicted models (if your keyboard isnât working, it probably is) then all you have to do is take your laptop to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, Apple Retail Store, or Apple Repair Center, and theyâll handle your MacBook or MacBook Pro keyboard replacement.
Itâs worth noting, however, that Apple created this service program after three class-action lawsuits. There were a lot of users with a Mac keyboard not working, and if they hadnât taken action this fix would cost hundreds of dollars.
Part of the problem is that it isnât simply a matter of replacing a single key on the butterfly keyboard â the entire MacBook keyboard has to be replaced, making it a fairly significant repair job. It can take up to five days before the shop is able to get the right parts and make the replacement.
Remember: Before taking your computer into the shop, always back up its most important data â even if you have to use a USB or Bluetooth keyboard to get it done. MacBook or MacBook Pro trackpad not working?

You might have noticed that some apps open and run automatically whenever you start your Windows PC or Mac. The behavior makes sense for apps from cloud storage services like OneDrive and Google Drive â you might want to keep all the files in sync with other platforms. However, other apps like Chrome, Spotify, Edge browser, etc., enable the 'Login/launch at startup' option by default, and mostly end up consuming resources at startup. Thankfully, there's a way to stop Spotify from opening at startup in macOS and Windows.
If you love music, then you probably won't mind it. However, it's odd that Spotify would want launch immediately after the OS boots â it's not a critical system app after all. The practice of forcing people to let an app launch at startup doesnât make sense. Also, that behavior is active by default whenever you install the Spotify app.
In this post, we will guide you through several ways to disable Spotify's automatic startup on Windows and Mac. Letâs first talk about the common method that works on both Windows and macOS.
1. Use Startup and Windows Behavior Option (Windows and Mac)
Spotify offers the ability to change the 'launch at startup' function from the app settings. The app is almost identical on both Windows and Mac. You can follow the steps below to access the option and change it.
Step 1: Open the Spotify app on Mac or Windows.
Step 2: You can select the drop-down beside the profile icon and go to Settings. Alternatively, you can also use Command +, keyboard shortcut on Mac to open Spotify Settings.
Spotify mac auto update. Step 3: Scroll down to the bottom and select Show Advanced Settings.
Step 4: The option will open several other Spotify options.
Step 5: Navigate to the 'Startup and Window Behavior' heading. You will find the âOpen Spotify automatically after you log into the computerâ option. Click on the drop-down and change the behavior to No.
After that, Spotify won't load by itself whenever you start your computer. Spotify's Windows app also offers an option to minimize or close the app when you hit the close button. You can change that too if you like.
If Spotify still opens at startup on Mac, then check the next solution.

3. Disable Spotify From Users & Groups (Mac)
